The Village Project

By Tasting Australia, Forage Built & Hutt St Centre

Help build The Village to support people experiencing homelessness in Adelaide

There is a shortage of affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness in South Australia.

So Forage Built and Hutt St Centre have come together with the aim of creating The Village - where people experiencing homelessness can find safe accommodation and a sense of community.

Tasting Australia presented by RAA Travel has teamed up with Forage Built and Hutt St Centre as the festival’s exclusive community partners.

Tasting Australia aims to raise awareness and vital funds at the 2021 & 2022 festival which will help with the design and build of the first ‘pod’ in The Village - a safe, transportable home for people experiencing housing challenges in South Australia.

THE CALYX

Forage Built has developed a prototype of a pod, the Calyx 16. This is the first prototype for the single occupancy dwelling underpinning the overall Village concept.

The concept of the Calyx – the protective layer around a flower bud – is to provide a safe, affordable, modular, transportable, energy efficient and eco-friendly 16 sqm home for people experiencing homelessness. Unlike other solutions, which include temporary use of motels and share houses, the Calyx offers a personal haven to store belongings, sleep safely and due to its clever and beautiful design, start to regain a sense of dignity and self-worth. Furthermore, due to its planned configuration on a site, people can start to safely connect with others to form community, access services and find their way back into permanent housing.

For more info on the pod visit: https://foragebuilt.com.au

THE VILLAGE

The Calyx 16 home is not designed to exist in isolation; they will be built in a community of pods, each separated by a veggie patch that each occupant can call their own.

The Village of five pods will offer transitional accommodation until suitable, safe long-term housing can be secured. This transitional accommodation is a step on the pathway to homefulness.

Residents at The Village will be participants in Hutt St Centre’s Aspire program. The Aspire program helps people with medium and long-term case management and assistance.

The lack of affordable housing supply has meant 45% of people engaging in Hutt St Centre’s Aspire program are not housed.

YOU CAN HELP BUILD THE FIRST POD IN THE VILLAGE

Tasting Australia presented by RAA Travel has teamed up with Forage Built and Hutt St Centre as the festival’s exclusive community partners.

Tasting Australia aims to raise awareness and vital funds at the 2021 & 2022 festival which will help with the design and build of the first ‘pod’ in The Village - a safe, transportable home for people experiencing housing challenges in South Australia.

Head to Tasting Australia's Town Square 30 April - 9 May 2021, Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga and check out the prototype of 'the pod'. 2022 dates to be announced!

By making a generous tax-deductible donation you'll be helping build a 16m2 pod - the first pod in The Village - that will be safe accommodation to help a person experiencing homeless rebuild their life.

Tasting Australia Festival Director, Simon Bryant was instrumental in formalising the partnership, having previously worked with Hutt St Centre.

“I’m so proud to see the festival officially linked to these community partners who work so hard on a strategic long-term level to help people achieve the basic human right of safe and dignified housing,” says Mr Bryant.

Hi, we really appreciate what you are doing, refreshing to see as the focus on housing. Hoping they are built with efficient passive methodologies, for real sustainability. Are you building directly or working with s prefabricator?

Such a great idea. I'd love to see these made available throughout SA to support people who are unable to access affordable or stable housing. A house is often the first step to better things including meaningful employment and a new sense of identity for many people who are vulnerable or socially excluded.
